April Triathlon in the West Wight kicks off the IOW Tri club Triathlon season

Five of our older members took part in a sprint Triathlon on Sunday 23rd April. Slightly different distances to the usual sprint triathlon with a shorter 600m pool swim and a longer 24.3km undulating cycle followed by a 5km run loop .

1st to finish from the club was was Dan Morgan (who also took a podium of 3rd place overall) with his son Henry Morgan hot on his tail! (Enjoy this one Dan, Henry is coming for you!) Benjamin Van der Helstraete came in next after recording the fastest overall swim time and Phil Bunn and Gethin Hepworth followed producing some great results for a cold damp April morning. We are sure Gethin soon went back into his PJ’s which he had turned up in!

Great camaraderie from our boys and a really fun morning out.

Looking ahead to Spring….

Looking ahead to the warmer weather and open water swimming for our newer members have a read of Swim Secure’s safety guide for this. We will be enjoying the amazing facility of the Solent we have on our doorstep before too long & this guide will help.

Eton Dorney Triathlon

Katie, Jasper, Emily and Elsie competed in the Eton Dorney Triathlon which was the final (and compulsory) event in the Junior South Central Regional Series. Katie was in her first year in this age group and finished in a fabulous 7th position out of 23! Jasper gained some valuable points for the series with a 12th place out of 27. In the Tristar 1 girls, Emily was 2nd girl and Elsie 3rd girl. Seeing our club colours on the podium with the Olympic Rings in the background was fabulous!

British Aquathlon Championships

Benjamin left his bike at home and travelled to the iconic Dorney Lake in Windsor for the British Aquathlon Championships. He had an amazing swim, coming out of the 750m swim in 6th place out of 69 competitors of all ages! He then went on to complete a 5km run. His finishing position resulted in him becoming the U20 Silver Medallist in the British Aquathlon Championships!

Chichester Triathlon

Another fantastic club presence at Chichester Triathlon and Aquathlon. Ollie (Aquathlon), Megan and Rosie (Triathlon) represented the club for the very first time at a mainland event and gave it their all. Fabulous efforts also from Rafferty, Alex, Katie, Jasper, Emily and Elsie in the triathlon. Emily came 1st in Tristar 1 girls and Elsie came 3rd! All of them showed fantastic support for each other around the course.

Bowood House Triathlon 25th/26th June

One of our favourite events to travel to, and a South Central Regional Series event. We had an excellent turn out and the club was represented in Tristar 1, Tristar 2, Tristar 3, sprint distance and the British Triathlon Super Series Aquathlon! Well done to Elsie, Emily, Jasper, Annabelle, Katie, Rafferty, Martin, Benjamin, Gethin, Lottie-Rose and coach Mark. We had three podiums; Emily 1st place girl in Tristar 1, 1st U17 for Benjamin in the sprint and 1st U20 for Gethin in the sprint. This is a challenging event with a tough lake swim, a long hill climb out of the swim, a headwind on the cycle and a hilly run and everyone gave it 100% and continued to support their club mates once they had finished racing.

Eastbourne Aquathlon

Martin put his sea swimming training into practice and travelled to Eastbourne Aquathlon. He put in some brilliant efforts in both the sea swim and the run.

Billingshurst Duathlon

The day after Chapel Aquathlon, Martin caught a 6am ferry to compete in Billingshurst Duathlon. It was a hot race but he finished on the podium in a brilliant 3rd place in the Tristar 3 boy category. Well done Martin!
